Engineering Meetings

Engineering meetings provide a structured way for the team to collaborate, plan, and discuss technical and cultural aspects of our work. These meetings ensure alignment on priorities, encourage knowledge sharing, and foster a strong engineering culture.

We currently have two recurring engineering-focused meetings:

  • Engineering Planning – a structured meeting to review ongoing initiatives and technical priorities.
  • Chinwag – a more informal session for discussion, collaboration, and knowledge sharing.

Engineering Planning

Engineering planning is a monthly meeting focused on shaping our technical direction, reviewing ongoing improvements, and aligning on upcoming work. It provides a space for discussing our tech roadmap and ensuring the team has a clear view of engineering priorities.

Agenda & Structure

  • Recurring Topics:
    • Discuss tech roadmap items
    • Review the technical improvements document
      • A smaller group can tech spec tickets, ensuring they're ready for upcoming sprints
      • Identify if larger initiatives require PM involvement or additional resources
    • Discuss potential refactoring topics
    • Culture & feedback discussions

    Note

Other topics can be added as needed

  • Agenda Management:
    • The agenda is maintained in Notion
    • Recurring topics are always covered, with space for additional items

Chinwag

The Chinwag session is a monthly informal engineering chat. It allows the team to discuss various topics in a relaxed setting, share ideas, and collaborate on small technical exercises.

Agenda

  • Types of discussions:
    • Shorter "show and tells"
    • "Mob programming" sessions with the goal of shipping something small
    • General tech chats
  • Agenda Management:
    • Topics are proposed and 'managed' in the chinwag topics canvas in the #dev Slack channel

These meetings help ensure we maintain alignment, encourage open discussions, and continuously improve our engineering practices.
